* Inscribed by the publisher 'Kate Temple from her affectionate friend Wm. Kent. 6 Dec 1859'. The book includes particularly two illustrations by Samuel Palmer : see Lister's Palmer Catalogue. An outstanding book designed by Joseph Cundall : and employing a complex double printing system by Edmund Evans : and with each page set within a gold border, many with large and elaborate head & tailpieces also in gold all by Albert Warren. McLean describes the book as 'Bibliographically confusing'. In this Kent 1860 Edition 'the illustrations are printed in black with one or two neutral tints, and the decorations, by Albert Warren, in gold : it carries a Preface by Joseph Cundall, who had devised the book, and may have been its true publisher. It makes an extremely handsome volume'. Another edition, in a slightly smaller format, printed in colour but without the decorations in gold, was later issued by Ward, Lock & Tyler : 'It is, in all its forms, a fine book' [McLean : Victorian Book Design p180]. See Lister : Palmer Catalogue Raisonne : B4A noting blue or scarlet cloth.
